Questions About Doctors in Florence
Can I use the public health system as a resident?
As a rule yes. If you work in Italy as an employee or self-employed, you and your dependent family are enrolled in the national health service; residents here on other grounds, for example residenza elettiva, usually choose between voluntary enrolment against an annual contribution and private insurance. In Florence this is handled by ASL Toscana Centro, and the conditions are worth checking for your specific case.
How fast can you get me an appointment?
A private appointment can usually be arranged within a few days, and for urgent matters sometimes the same day. In the public system bookings go through the CUP and the wait is longer, which is why most residents use both routes depending on how urgent the issue is.
Do the doctors speak English, German or Russian?
A good number of specialists in Florence work comfortably in English, fewer in German or Russian. We look for the right language first, and when no suitable specialist speaks it we bring a medical interpreter to the visit.
How much does a private visit cost?
Private fees depend on the specialist, on the clinic and on whether imaging or lab work is needed alongside the visit, so we quote on request rather than in advance. We confirm the exact fee in writing before anything is booked, and our own accompaniment is quoted separately depending on scope. For residents enrolled in the public system, visits follow the regional ticket rules instead.
Can you help with prescriptions and pharmacies?
Yes. We explain which medicines are prescription-only in Italy, arrange the prescription with the doctor and find the pharmacy, including the ones on night duty. Only a doctor can match an Italian equivalent to the medication you took at home, and we set up that conversation.
What do I do in an emergency?
Call 112, the European emergency number, or 118 for an ambulance, and go to the pronto soccorso of the nearest hospital: urgent care is given regardless of insurance or paperwork, though without enrolment in the health service it is usually billed afterwards. For non-urgent problems at night and at weekends there is the guardia medica. Message us in parallel and we join in to translate.
