Wedding venues in Florence fall into four groups: Renaissance palazzi inside the historic centre, villas in the hills of Fiesole, Settignano and Bagno a Ripoli, castles and wine estates at the gates of Chianti, and hotels, restaurants and rooftop terraces for smaller receptions. Several hill villas have a consecrated private chapel, and a Catholic ceremony inside one is possible only with permission from the diocese, granted case by case rather than automatically. What does a private chapel in a Tuscan villa actually allow?
A Catholic ceremony inside a private chapel requires permission from the local Ordinary, granted case by case and never automatically. A blessing or a symbolic ceremony in the same chapel is far simpler to arrange, and a legally binding civil ceremony still needs a separately licensed venue.
Can we legally marry at the villa itself?
Only if the comune has designated that venue as a detached civil register office. Each municipality publishes its own list of authorised sites and the slot has to be agreed with the register office well ahead, so we check both points before any deposit. Otherwise the civil ceremony takes place in Palazzo Vecchio or another municipal hall and the villa hosts the celebration.
How many guests do these venues hold?
As a rule of thumb: rooftops and restaurants 20-60, palazzi in the centre 60-150, hill villas 100-250, castles and wine estates 150-300 and above. Seated dinner capacity is almost always well below the standing-reception figure a venue advertises.
What does a Florence wedding venue cost?
We deliberately publish no figures, because on their own they mislead. The site fee depends on the type of venue (a palazzo in the historic centre, a hilltop villa, an estate rented together with its rooms), on the day of the week and on the season, and estates taken with accommodation for a whole weekend sit in a different bracket altogether. High-season Saturdays are the most expensive slots, weekdays and the shoulder months are noticeably gentler. For every venue on your shortlist we send the exact site fee in writing, straight from the owner's tariff, and we build the full wedding budget after a short brief: guest count, date and format. That way you compare real terms for your own wedding instead of an average.
Which is the best season?
May, June, September and early October give the most reliable weather and the long evening light. July and August are hot in the city and noticeably easier up in the hills. April and late October are quieter and cheaper, with a real chance of rain, so a covered plan B matters.
How far ahead should we book?
For a Saturday between May and September, allow 12-18 months: landmark villas and the chapels go first, and civil ceremony slots in Palazzo Vecchio are limited. Off-season and weekday dates can often be secured in 4-6 months.
