The Luminara di San Ranieri takes place in Pisa on the evening of 16 June every year, the eve of the city's patron saint. Around 100,000 candles set in white wooden frames, the biancheria, trace the outlines of the palazzi, churches and towers along the Lungarni on both banks of the Arno. The public lighting is switched off at dusk and the fireworks go up over the river at about 23:00. The next editions are 16 June 2027 and 16 June 2028. The evening is free and open to all, which is precisely the difficulty: the parapets are taken hours in advance and the centre closes to traffic during the day. We put you above the crowd rather than inside it.
When It Happens
The date never moves: 16 June, every year. The frames are set out along the river during the day, the candles are lit at dusk as the street lighting goes off, and the fireworks follow at about 23:00. It is the heart of the Giugno Pisano. On the afternoon of 17 June the four historic quartieri row the Palio di San Ranieri on the Arno, and the month closes with the Gioco del Ponte on the last Saturday of June: 26 June in 2027, 24 June in 2028.
Where to Watch, and What Is Not Possible
Both banks are public and free, so by mid-evening the railings along the Lungarni are several rows deep. The civilised way to see it is from a private terrace, a window or a river-facing apartment, or from a reserved table on a riverside terrace, and all of these are held weeks ahead. People often ask about a boat: the stretch of the Arno used by the festival is closed to private navigation for the Luminara, so the water is not an option. For the Gioco del Ponte at the end of the month the city puts a limited number of grandstand seats on sale, and they go quickly.
Where to Stay and Driver Logistics
During the day on 16 June the central bridges and the Lungarni close to cars, the riverfront turns pedestrian, and Pisa's historic centre is a camera-enforced ZTL in any case. The city publishes the exact perimeter and hours shortly before. In practice you want a room inside the closed area so the night ends on foot. Your driver agrees a pickup point outside the perimeter and waits there. Many of our clients spend June in Forte dei Marmi, about 40 km away, roughly 40 minutes on a clear road and longer once the city empties after the fireworks.

A Sample Itinerary
16 June
Arrive in the early afternoon and check in before the streets close. An hour in Piazza dei Miracoli while the frames are being set out along the river, an early dinner by the water, then the Luminara from your terrace as the lights go out, and the fireworks at about 23:00.
17 June
An unhurried morning. In the afternoon, the historic procession along the Lungarni and the Palio di San Ranieri: San Francesco, San Martino, Santa Maria and Sant'Antonio row up the Arno, and the race ends with a climb up the rope to take the palio from the top of a pole moored mid-river. All of it from a spot reserved for you.
Last Saturday of June
If your dates stretch that far, the Gioco del Ponte on the Ponte di Mezzo: around 700 figures in sixteenth-century costume, twelve magistrature, and the pushing contest on the rail laid along the bridge.
When to Book
Three to six months ahead is comfortable. River-facing terraces and apartments are few and tend to go back to the same families every year, hotels inside the centre fill first, and the restaurant tables with a view of the Lungarni are taken long before June. From May onwards we can still build a good evening, but the choice narrows fast.
