The Palio di Siena is one of Italy's most electric traditions: a bareback horse race run straight across a medieval square, carrying centuries of rivalry between seventeen contrade. Getting in, and watching from a proper vantage point, is close to impossible without preparation. We open access that is not on public sale.
When It Happens
The Palio runs twice a year on fixed dates, 2 July and 16 August. The next running is on 16 August 2026, with the following editions again on 2 July and 16 August in the years after. Demand is intense, and the best of everything is taken months in advance.
How to Attend and Where to Watch
The finest view is from private balconies and windows overlooking Piazza del Campo, which are reserved well ahead of time. There are grandstand seats (palchi) around the edge of the square, and a free standing area in the centre that becomes extremely crowded. On race day access to the city is restricted and the centre is packed, so everything has to be arranged in advance.

The ideal lead time is four to nine months before the date. Balconies, the best hotels and grandstand seats are limited and go first, so the earlier you come to us, the wider your choice. Closer to the date only compromise options remain, and often nothing at all.
